art

The remarkable Andrew Rannells in rehearsal last week as he  assumed the golden pumps of Hedwig on Broadway. I got to sit in and draw at the Belasco Theater on Tuesday and Friday as the company fine tuned the transition.

Been on a Game of Thrones binge since Friday when I developed a bad cold and ended up home and sick. That explains the strong fantasy worlds showing up in my sketchbooks. It’s kind of a throwback to when I was a kid and I would draw knights and dragons for my brother Ben…

Last Friday, I got to draw live—projected on a big screen as I drew in ink and marker—with Threeds, a three-oboe band—at joespub.

I met the band through one of their members, Katie Scheele; she approached me a few years back about doing the cover art for their debut album. They came to my studio in Brooklyn and played while I drew them for the cover portrait (up top there).

Then they asked me to draw along live with them at Joe’s Pub for the album release party of their second disc. Above is the drawing I did at soundcheck and below that, the actual show drawing—each individual section of the sketch is a song.

It was a great night of wonderful music and improv drawing…
