Quixotic, performing last night in front of Lawrence Arts Center for the Free State Festival 2014.

Last night I got to go to Langston Hughes’s old Church in Lawrence, Kansas and draw along with the St. Luke Choir and the Matt Otto Jazz Quintet for two sets as part of the Free State Festival. It was a joyous night of music and art and I’m grateful that the Festival invited me along to be a part of the festivities…It’s always a thrill to hear music for the first time as I’m drawing it and it’s especially great when there are two packed houses in a row. That said, there’s something especially powerful about leaping into the creative unknown in a church full of congregants…

I drew this for a New York Times sketchbook report about Summer In The City a few years ago—back when I had a studio directly across from the Kentile sign. I stood in the window at the top of the stairwell and captured it one hot August afternoon. Last week, most of the sign was removed and now my neighborhood looks a little less unique.
